This open cluster was discovered by the Sicilian astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodierna in 1654 to be rediscovered by the British William Herschel in 1783. The Big Dog Tau cluster owes its common name to the star τ (Tau - magnitude : 4,4) which illuminates its center. It is also found under the name "Northern Jewel Box" in reference to NGC 4755 located in the constellation of the Southern Cross.
