Trefärgad bulbyl delas upp i tre underarter med följande utbredning:[3]

Den betraktas ofta som en underart till trädgårdsbulbyl (P. barbatus).[3]

Status

IUCN erkänner den inte som art, varför den inte placeras i någon hotkategori.
