Topcliffe Motte, Maiden Bower. Topcliffe Motte & Bailey was established by the Percies soon after the rising of the north in 1069. It would have been a wooden tower and palisade, and was refortified by Geoffrey Plantagenet, Bishop of Lincoln, in 1174.
Behind the trees, now growing on the raised bailey, is an earthwork known as Manor Hills, which was the site of a newer house built by the Percies in the 14thC. Despite having 5m ditch a local mob breached these defences and murdered the 4th Earl of Northumberland in 1489.
Additional: The field from which I took this picture is rapidly being eroded by the Swale & Cod Beck.
