Smethwick (uttalas [ˈsmɛðɨk]) är en ort i unparished area Warley, i distriktet Sandwell som ingår i storstadsområdet West Midlands i centrala England i Storbritannien.
Historia
Smethwick var en civil parish 1894–1966[1] när blev den en del av Warley, West Bromwich och Birmingham.[2] Civil parish hade 68 390 invånare år 1961.[3] Staden nämndes i Domedagsboken (Domesday Book) år 1086, och kallades då Smedeuuich.[4]
En viktig händelse i ortens historia var då Malcolm X besökte Smethwick i februari 1965 några dagar innan han blev mördad i New York. Några månader tidigare hade den konservativa politikern Peter Griffiths segrat i valkretsen Smethwick med sin slogan "Om du vill ha en nigger som granne, rösta på Labour". Malcolm X sade till journalisterna på Marshall Street i Smethwick att han hade hört att ortens färgade invånare behandlas "lika dåligt som judarna under Hitler".[5]

Guru Nanak Gurdwara - High St Smethwick Many years ago - far too many to think about - this was the hub of the locality. To the left was the Prince's cinema to which, as children, my father used to take my brother & me. Next to it was a chemists shop above which Tich the barber had his salon. Tich was a retired jockey. The Gurdwara now occupies the site of the Smethwick Congregational Church. Further along was a small, but very busy Post Office then the Midland Bank followed by Lloyds Bank. On this side of the road - where the grass verge can be seen - was Barretts the greengrocer, then Union St followed by a chemists shop and Walsh's, the local department store. It's all changed now & has become little more than a car-park.
