Sars-cov-2 beta, variant B.1.351, även kallad 501Y.V2, 20H/501Y.V2 (tidigare 20C/501Y.V2) eller den sydafrikanska covid-19- mutationen,[1] är en variant av sars-cov-2, viruset som orsakar sjukdomen covid-19. Varianten upptäcktes först i Sydafrika av landets folkhälsomyndighet den 18 december 2020.[2][3][4] Forskare och statsmän rapporterade att varianten förekom främst hos yngre människor utan några underliggande sjukdomar och gav en svårare sjukdomsutveckling.[5] Den sydafrikanska folkhälsomyndigheten indikerade också att den nya varianten kan vara en drivande faktor i landets andra våg i covid-19-pandemin, då den nya varianten sprids mycket snabbare än tidigare varianter.[6][7]

Forskare noterade att varianten jämfört med ursprungsviruset samlat på sig flera mutationer, vilket tillåter den att lättare fästa sig på människans celler, detta på grund av tre mutationer inuti lipidhöljets proteiners receptor-bindande domän, som binder ACE2 hos människans celler.

Den 23 december redovisade Storbritanniens hälsominister Matt Hancock att två personer som rest från Sydafrika till Storbritannien testats positivt för beta-varianten av sars-cov-2.[8]

Sverige

Den 17 januari 2021 meddelade Folkhälsomyndigheten att de upptäckt ett fall av vad som då kallades den sydafrikanska virusmutationen i Sverige.[9] Den 19 januari upptäcktes ytterligare ett fall.[10][11] Den 25 januari upptäcktes ytterligare ett fall men rapporterades först dagen efter.[11]

Den 17 februari 2021 upptäcktes en klustersmitta i Region Västmanland, där minst 20 personer hade betavarianten av viruset. Alla hade varit i kontakt med varandra, men ingen av dem kunde kopplas till någon resa till Sydafrika.[12]

This illustration, created at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), reveals ultrastructural morphology exhibited by coronaviruses. Note the spikes that adorn the outer surface of the virus, which impart the look of a corona surrounding the virion, when viewed electron microscopically. A novel coronavirus, named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China in 2019. The illness caused by this virus has been named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
