Prins Edward, hertig av Kent, född Edward George Nicholas Patrick Paul den 9 oktober 1935 i Belgravia i London, är en medlem av det brittiska kungahuset som är son till prins Georg, hertig av Kent och prinsessan Marina av Grekland och Danmark.
Han var både kusin till drottning Elizabeth II på fädernet samt även syssling till hennes make prins Philip, hertig av Edinburgh på sitt möderne.
Bakgrund
Prins Edward ärvde vid 6 års ålder pärsvärdigheten hertig av Kent, efter sin fars död i en flygolycka i Skottland. Vid kröningen i Westminster Abbey 1953 var han den tredje personen att svära trohet till drottningen, efter prins Philip och farbrodern prins Henry, hertig av Gloucester.[1]
Hertigen erhöll sin utbildning vid Ludgrove School och Eton College i Berkshire och därefter internatskolan Institut Le Rosey i Schweiz.[1] Han tog examen från Royal Military Academy Sandhurst och har tjänstgjort som yrkesofficer i Storbritanniens armé i aktiv tjänst, med tjänstgöring under oroligheterna på Nordirland samt på Cypern inom UNFICYP, fram till 1976 då han gick i pension som överstelöjtnant. 1983 utsågs han till generalmajor[2] och 1993 till fältmarskalk[3], av sin kusin, drottning Elizabeth II. Hertigen är sedan 1970 ordförande för Commonwealth War Graves Commission.[4]
Hertigen av Kent gifte sig i katedralen i York 1961 med Katharine Worsley (f. 1933) med vilken han har tre barn.[1]
På 1960-talet började han med representativa plikter inom kungahuset och han deltog som drottningens representant vid flera tidigare koloniers självständighetsfiranden: Gambia (1965), Guyana (1966), Sierra Leone (1961) och Uganda (1962).[5] Hertigen av Kent är bland annat ordförande (sedan 1969) för All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club och delar som sådan ut priset till segraren i Wimbledonmästerskapen.[4] Fram till 2001 var han Storbritanniens särskilda handelsrepresentant, en roll som därefter övertogs av kusinbarnet prins Andrew, hertig av York. Han är också ordförande i The Scout Association, Royal United Services Institute och stormästare för The United Grand Lodge of England.
