Little sagebrush is most common at upper elevations in this area of the upper Snake River plains, including rocky shallow soils on the more open and exposed sites of Big Southern Butte. The presence of lupine (here, Lupinus argenteus) may be a function of the cold exposed setting on top of Big Butte because otherwise this genus (and this species) tends to occupy mostly disturbed settings on adjacent lower elevations lands.
