Poa fendleriana (muttongrass) when growing in sagebrush steppe or high alpine and subalpine settings commonly assumes a short-statured less-hairy growth form referred to as Poa cusickii. When growing in protected but otherwise open settings, such as the understory of subalpine Pinus albicaulis, Poa cusickii looks very much like Poa fendleriana in its tall stature (about 0.5 m tall) and in having a compacted greenish inflorescences (albeit with short hairs on the florets).

Although similar to the widespread Poa secunda in ecology (e.g., predilection to early summer flowering in the sagebrush steppe), the shorter and wider inflorescences of Poa cusickii differ greatly from the narrower and longer inflorescences of Poa secunda.

The lemmas are mostly glabrous except along the veins near the base, and this region is hidden by the overlapping configuration of the glumes and florets.
