Philip Levine

Philip Levine, född 10 januari 1928 i Detroit, Michigan, död 14 februari 2015 i Fresno, Kalifornien, var en amerikansk poet och universitetslärare.

Philip Levine växte upp i Chicago och han var även mest känd för sina skildringar av arbetarklassen i staden. Han behandlade även arvet efter judiska immigranter i sin poesi.[1] Han hade själv börjat arbeta i bilindustrin vid 14 års ålder. Under universitetsstudier vid Wayne University började han skriva poesi. Han undervisade vid California State University i Fresno 1958-1992 och även vid andra universitet. Han var verksam vid Board of Chancellors of the Academy of American Poets 2000-2006. I svensk översättning finns hans 1933: dikter.

Levine fick Pulitzerpriset för poesi 1995 för The Simple Truth samt National Book Award for Poetry 1980 och 1991. Han utsågs till Poet Laureate of the United States för 2011–2012.
