Olympiska sommarspelen 2004 var de tjugofemte moderna olympiska spelen (under den 28:e moderna olympiaden) och hölls i Aten i Grekland mellan 13 och 29 augusti 2004.[1] Tävlingarna sågs på plats av cirka 6,7 miljoner åskådare.
Historia
Vid den Internationella olympiska kommitténs möte i Lausanne den 5 september 1997 bestämdes att Aten skulle arrangera spelen 2004. De andra återstående kandidatstäderna var Kapstaden, Buenos Aires, Rom och Stockholm. Sex andra städer hade ansökt men blivit bortsållade av IOK 1996. Dessa städer var Istanbul, Lille, Rio de Janeiro, San Juan, Sevilla och Sankt Petersburg.
Noterbart
- Maratonloppen sprangs från just Maraton till Aten, med målgång på 1896 olympiastadion. Dessutom avgjordes kulstötningen i Olympia.
- Brasiliens Vanderlei de Lima ledde maratonloppet när han överfölls av en åskådare med mindre än 10 kilometer kvar. Detta var en bidragande orsak till att han inte kunde försvara sin ledning och vinna loppet. de Lima belönades senare med Pierre de Coubertins medalj, IOK:s finaste medalj, för sin sportsliga anda som han bland annat visade med en liten segerdans strax före mållinjen.
- Nya grenar för året var brottning för damer och sabel för damer.
- Argentina vann herrarnas basketturnering, och var därmed det första lag frånsett USA att ta guld sedan professionella spelare tilläts 1992.
- Simmaren Michael Phelps tog åtta medaljer, sex guld och två brons.

Deltagande nationer
Totalt deltog 202 länder i spelen 2004. Detta innebar att alla de nationella kommittéerna i världen ställde upp med trupper precis som vid spelen i Atlanta 1996. Kiribati och Östtimor debuterade vid dessa spel och tillsammans med Afghanistan som missade spelen i Sydney 2000 så gick antalet deltagande länder upp från 199 till 202.
Arenor
Öppningsceremonin
Invigningen hölls den 13 augusti 2004 vid Atens Olympiastadion. Ceremonin inleddes med en 28 sekunder lång nedräkning – en sekund per spel som hållits sedan Aten var värd förra gången. Sekunderna markerades av ljudet från hjärtslag. När nedräkningen var avslutades påbörjades ett fyrverkeri. På en pool mitt på stadion tändes en eld som skapade en brinnande bild av de olympiska ringarna.
Öppningsceremin inleddes med antik grekisk kultur och historia. Först av allt seglade en grekisk pojke in på stadion i en gigantisk pappersbåt samtidigt som han viftade med den grekiska flaggan. Därefter följde en parad med olika scener och karaktärer ur grekisk mytologi ackompanjerat av traditionella grekiska trumslagare.
Detta följdes av att nationerna tågade in till musik av den nederländska DJ:n DJ Tiësto.
Vanligtvis inleder Grekland paraden medan värdnationen går sist. Eftersom Grekland stod värd den här gången skickades bara fanbäraren först medan idrottarna fick gå i slutet av paraden. Efter fanbäraren kom Saint Lucia (Αγια Λουκια på grekiska) som första land av 202 stycken. Över 10 500 idrottsmän deltog i paraden. Då länderna gick i alfabetisk ordning efter det grekiska alfabetet kom Zimbabwe i mitten av paraden, de brukar oftast komma sist.
Afghanistans entré var en känslomässig höjdpunkt på paraden, då de inte medverkat vid några olympiska spel sedan talibanregimen tog makten i landet. Även den irakiska truppen väckte känslor då dess idrottsmän tidigare torterats av Uday Hussein, Saddam Husseins son. Uppmärksammade blev även Nord- och Sydkoreas idrottsmän, som symboliskt gick tillsammans, liksom de gjorde vid Olympiska sommarspelen 2000 i Sydney. Kiribati och Östtimor gjorde sin olympiska debut 2004.
Som en effekt av USA:s impopulära beslut att inleda Irakkriget gjorde vissa av åskådarna tummen ner då den amerikanska truppen kom in på stadion, men det gick inte att ta miste på att amerikanerna även hade en stor beundrarskara i publiken, hurraropen och applåderna var nog de största denna afton.
Efter paraden framförde den isländska sångerskan Björk sången "Oceania" från hennes kommande album Medúlla. Under tiden sången spelades drogs ett stort tygstycke över huvudena på de samlade idrottsmännen i stadion. Vid slutet av sången projecerades en världskarta på tyget.
Öppningceremonin avslutades som brukligt med att den olympiska elden tändes, en tradition sedan olympiska sommarspelen 1936 i Berlin. Fackelbäraren Nikolas Kaklamanakis kom inspringande på stadion och tände en gigantisk fackla som sedan brann under spelen.
Avslutningsceremonin
Avslutningsceremonin hölls även den på Atens Olympiastadion, den 29 augusti 2004. Ca 70 000 människor fanns samlade för att bevittna avslutningen.
Ceremonin började med flera uppträdanden av grekiska artister, däribland Georde Dalaras, Dmitri Galani och Charis Alexiou, och tusentals människor som framförde en humoristisk och symbolisk förevisning på arenagolvet.
Sedan intog flaggbärare från alla deltagarländerna scenen, medan de övriga deltagarna fyllde hela arenan.
Efter korta tal av Gianna Angelopoulos, den högst ansvarige för dessa spels genomförande, och av Internationella Olympiska Kommitténs ordförande Jacues Rogge, som beskrev OS i Aten som oförglömliga, drömspel, spelades Greklands och Kinas nationalsånger och ländernas båda nationsflaggor hissades. Atens borgmästare Dora Bakogiannis lämnade över den olympiska flaggan till Pekings borgmästare Wang Qishen.
Efter ett kort uppträdande av kinesiska skådespelare, dansare och musiker, under ledning av den berömda kinesiske dirigenten Zhang Yimou, förklarade IOC-ordföranden Rogge de olympiska sommarspelen 2004 avslutade.
En ung grekisk flicka tände symboliskt ett ljus mot den olympiska elden, för att sedan lämna detta vidare till några andra barn som blåste ut flamman.
Emblem och maskotar
Emblem
Spelens emblem offentliggjordes den 30 september 1999. Det valdes ut bland 690 andra förslag och föreställer en olivkrans.
Maskotar
Denna gång hade olympiska spelen två maskotar: Athena och Phevos. Maskotarna är syskon och har lånat sina namn av två gammelgrekiska gudar.(Phevos är ett smeknamn för Apollon.) Formen och utseendet till dessa två maskotar har sin förebild i den första leksaks-dockan som är känd i världen och som just uppenbarats sin tillvaro gömd i jorden många tusen år, just vid utgrävningar i Grekland. Den var av lera och symboliserar den vänskap och den överbyggande kärlek som två vänner har. Vänner och också en familj som börjar i tvåsamhet: som växer och blir fler och som överbryggar olikheter som styrs av ömsesidighet och förståelse. Precis som de olympiska Spelen, såsom de har utvecklats och vad de idag symboliserar av vänskap, förståelse och kärlek utanför alla nationella gränser, kulturer och språk.
Mediabevakning
Internet
För första gången fick vissa tv-bolag sända ut video från olympiska spelen även på Internet. Dessa sändningar skedde dock bara regionalt. Detta gjorde att bland annat BBC bara gjorde alla sina sändningarna fritt tillgängliga på Internet för boende i Storbritannien. SVT visade enskilda videoklipp för boende i Sverige. Likaså i USA.
TV i Sverige
I Sverige bevakades de olympiska spelen av flera tv-kanaler. SVT fick automatiskt sändningsrätterna till OS genom att de är medlemmar i EBU. Av avtalsskäl var de dock tvungna att sälja delar av utbudet till ett annat tv-bolag, varför även TV4:s kanaler sände från spelen. Detta gjorde att följande tv-kanaler sände från spelen:
- SVT1 (delvis hela dagen)
- SVT2 (delvis hela dagen)
- 24 (9.00-23.00)
- SVT Extra (samsände med Barnkanalen 18.00-23.00)
- TV4 (sände de viktigaste fotbollsmatcherna)
- TV4 Plus (sände fotbolls- och basketmatcher)
- En särskild OS-kanal som bara distribuerades av Canal Digital (sände fotbolls- och basketmatcher som inte fick plats i TV4)
- Eurosport (dygnet runt)

Dominicas flagga
Den Dominikanska republikens flagga består av ett vitt centrerat kors som sträcker sig hela vägen ut till flaggans kant. Flag of Iran. The tricolor flag was introduced in 1906, but after the Islamic Revolution of 1979 the Arabic words 'Allahu akbar' ('God is great'), written in the Kufic script of the Qur'an and repeated 22 times, were added to the red and green strips where they border the white central strip and in the middle is the emblem of Iran (which is a stylized Persian alphabet of the Arabic word Allah ("God")).
The official ISIRI standard (translation at FotW) gives two slightly different methods of construction for the flag: a compass-and-straightedge construction used for File:Flag of Iran (official).svg, and a "simplified" construction sheet with rational numbers used for this file.
Flag of Israel. Shows a Magen David (“Shield of David”) between two stripes. The Shield of David is a traditional Jewish symbol. The stripes symbolize a Jewish prayer shawl (tallit).
Flag of Jamaica. “The sunshine, the land is green, and the people are strong and bold” is the symbolism of the colours of the flag. GOLD represents the natural wealth and beauty of sunlight; GREEN represents hope and agricultural resources; BLACK represents the strength and creativity of the people. The original symbolism, however, was "Hardships there are, but the land is green, and the sun shineth", where BLACK represented the hardships being faced.

Chinese Taipei Olympic Flag. According to the official website of Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, Blue Sky(circle) & White Sun(triangles) above the Olympic rings is neither the National Emblem of the Republic of China, nor the Party Emblem of Kuomintang (KMT), but a design in between, where the triangles do not extend to the edge of the blue circle, as registered at International Olympic Committee in 1981 and digitally rendered in 2013. Besides, the blue outline of the five-petaled plum blossom is broader than the red one. Moreover, the CMYK code of the blue one and the Blue Sky & White Sun is "C100-M100-Y0-K0", and different from the Olympic rings (C100-M25-Y0-K0). Note that it's the only version recognized by IOC.
