Olympiska spelen har ökat i omfattning från 42 evenemang med färre än 250 manliga tävlingsdeltagare från 14 nationer 1896, till 339 evenemang (grenar) med 11 325 tävlingsdeltagare från 205 nationer 2021.
De olympiska sommarspelen har hållits i fem kontinenter av totalt 19 nationer. Spelen har hållits fyra gånger USA (1904, 1932, 1984 och 1996), tre gånger i Storbritannien (1908, 1948 och 2012), två gånger i Grekland (1896 och 2004), Frankrike (1900 och 1924), Tyskland (1936 och 1972), Australien (1956 och 2000), och Japan (1964 och 2020), och en gång i Sverige (1912), Belgien (1920), Nederländerna (1928), Finland (1952), Italien (1960), Mexiko (1968), Kanada (1976), Sovjetunionen (1980), Sydkorea (1988), Spanien (1992), Kina (2008), och Brasilien (2016).
Endast fem nationer har deltagit i alla sommarspel (2021) – Australien, Frankrike, Storbritannien, Grekland och Schweiz. Det är USA som både har tagit flest guldmedaljer och flest medaljer totalt.
Vid de första olympiska spelen i modern tid så fanns det endast 9 sporter.[1] Sedan dess har antalet sporter gradvis ökat till 28 för spelen 2000–2008. Vid de olympiska sommarspelen 2012 föll dock antalet sporter tillbaka till 21 efter ett beslut av Internationella olympiska kommittén att ta bort baseball och softboll. Dessa sporter behåller sin status som olympiska sporter med möjligheten att återinföras igen i framtida spel.[2] 9 oktober 2009 röstade den Internationella olympiska kommittén att återinföra både golf och rugby, vilket innebär att antalet sporter som återigen var 28.[3]
Nuvarande och utgångna sommarsporter
Följande sporter (eller discipliner) utgör det nuvarande och utgångna officiella programmet och listas alfabetiskt enligt det namn som används av den Internationella olympiska kommittén. De utgångna sporterna var tidigare en del av programmet som officiella sporter, men finns inte längre på det aktuella programmet. Siffrorna i varje cell anger antalet evenemang för varje sport respektive spel; en punkt (•) indikerar att sporten ifrågasatts som en demonstrationssport.
