Karl von Roques (1880-1949), full name "Karl Jerome Christian Georg Kurt von Roques", thus the non-matching first name on the name plate. Karl von Roques was a German general during World War II, commanding the rear forces behind Army Group South from the beginning of Operation Barbarossa through October 1941. (German designation: Befehlshaber des Rückwärtigen Heeresgebietes, Heeresgruppe Süd) As such, he bore responsibility for numerous war crimes such as the shooting of Jews, prisoners of war deemed to fall under the Commissar Order, and hostages. This photograph of Karl von Roques was taken by US Army photographers on behalf of the Office of Chief of Counsel for War Crimes (OCCWC) during Nuremberg Trial XII (High Command Trial / OKW-Prozess), in which he was accused and indicted, see High Command Trial.

"Had the 20th of July bomb plot against Hitler succeeded there would have been strikes and civil war within Germany," the former head of the German national defense testified today in his trial at Nuernberg. General Walter Warlimont is one of thirteen generals and one admiral indicted at Nuernberg on war crimes for their alleged participation as leaders and accomplices in the third Reich's aggressive wars. Warlimont, who was present and wounded in the explosions at Hitler's staff meeting, told the American court that the removal of Hitler would have neither brought peace nor democracy to Germany. Under the direct examination of his attorney he stated, "Already there were fanatic National Socialists in the army with ranks of Captain and Major; in the air force the doctrine was even at the highest levels, and the SS was entirely a party group - a state within a state. There were even divisions among the people who for 12 years had heard the same party line and had been effected either favorably or unfavorably from the NSDAP. Out of all this chaos there was not a single person who could have brought these factions together and achieve a peace and a democratic government." [Original Descriptive Caption]
