Miomantis caffra laying egg case.jpg

South Afican Praying Mantis, Miomantis caffra laying eggs.
Male Miomantis caffra.jpg
A male Miomantis caffra, an African species of praying mantis. The male is of slight build compared to the female (shown e.g. here) and is able to fly. This photo was taken in my room in Central Auckland, but the mantis was brought down from Warkworth. The image has been rotated and auto corrected in MS Office Picture Manager.
Miomantis caffra recently laid ootheca on lid.jpg
An ootheca laid by Miomantis caffra on the inside of a peanut butter jar lid. I brought the mother down from Warkworth to Auckland, where I took the photo. I found her mating, but was a little surprised to find she had laid this. Their oothecae change colour over time, as you can see by looking at some other photos (just laid, old). (I was especially surprised to see she laid a second, smaller ootheca a number of days later, which I may also upload at some point.)
Miomantis caffra ootheca.jpg
Miomantis caffra ootheca under an outdoor roof (quite an old one by the looks of it). Taken in Warkworth, New Zealand, where the species is common.
Egg case in lichen-encrusted crack.jpg

Egg case in a lichen-encrusted crack in a Pittosporum tree in Auckland, New Zealand. I believe the egg case is from the South African mantis Miomantis caffra. The lichen is probably Chrysothrix candelaris.[1]
Second instar Miomantis caffra nymph.jpg
A second instar nymph of the praying mantis species Miomantis caffra, taken on a paper background indoors. The second instar nymphs are more green in colour than the first instar, which are more brown. Taken in Central Auckland, New Zealand. Cropped from the original photo. (I have raised this individual myself with a few others so I know what developmental stage they are in.)
