Malassezia furfur in skin scale from a patient with tinea versicolor PHIL 3938 lores.jpg

ID#: 3938 Description: Note the yeast-like fungal cells and short hyphae of M. furfur in skin scale from a patient with tinea versicolor.

Usually Malassezia furfur grows sparsely without causing a rash. In some individuals, it grows more actively for reasons unknown, resulting in pale brown flaky patches on the trunk, neck, or arms, a condition called tinea versicolor.
