Tomb of Seti II the son of Merenptah, lived in unsettled times, perhaps reflected in the unfinished state of his Theban tomb. It is located in a separate branch at the south-west end of the Valley. Valley of the Kings, Egypt

This beautiful quartzite sarcophagus was created by Hatshepsut and used by her to re-bury her late father, Thutmose I. It was presented as a gift by the wealthy American lawyer Theodore M. Davis to the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston in 1904.

King’s Valley (KV) tomb No.19 belongs to Prince Mentuherkhepsef, a son of pharaoh Ramesses IX. It was originally designated to be the burial place of pharaoh Ramesses VIII until this king’s premature death aborted this plan. KV19 is only partly decorated but it features some of the finest reliefs dating to the Late New Kingdom period of Egypt.

A picture of Western Valley Tomb No.23 or WV23. This is the royal tomb of pharaoh Ay, the penultimate or second last ruler of the 18th dynasty of Egypt. He succeeded Tutankhamun and ruled Egypt for at least 4 years according to Nakhtmin's stela which dates to Year 4 of this king's reign. Ay was an elderly state official when he assumed the throne: he had previously served under Akhenaten, Neferneferuaten and Tutankhamun. Ay also enjoyed the privilege of having a well decorated rock cut tomb constructed for himself at Amarna during Akhenaten's reign.

On the wall, evocation of the 5th division of the Book of Gates: the court of Osiris. The Horemheb sarcophagus is made of red granite. The sides are decorated with the 4 sons of Horus and other deities. The corners of the sarcophagus are occupied by the protective deities with outstretched wings: Isis, Nephthys, Neith and Selkis. Horemheb was the last pharaoh of the eighteenth dynasty. He restored the cult of Amun by trying to erase all traces of Tutankhamun's predecessor, his father Amenophis IV: Akhenaten.

This is perhaps the most mysterious royal sarcophagus located in the Egyptian Museum of Cairo. Egyptologists today generally agree that it belongs to either pharaoh Akhenaten or Smenkhkare based on the numerous Amarna era objects found in Tomb KV55 of the Valley of the Kings. However, considering the amount of damnatio memoriae inflicted against the sarcophagus, where all its royal cartouches were erased, it might well have belonged to Akhenaten himself whose memory was proscribed with the restoration of the cult of Amun after his reign. The sarcophagus was found in January 1907 in Tomb KV55 by Theodore Davis and Edward R. Ayrton.

Tomb of Rameses IV - The sarcophagus chamber was intended to be a pillared hall which would have preceded the actual burial chamber. Valley of the Kings, Egypt
Because the plan was abbreviated, no pillars were cut and a sarcophagus 'pit' was sunk into the floor. The walls of the burial chamber illustrate the first four divisions of the 'Book of Gates' and selections of texts from the 'Amduat'.
