Lecanora fuscescens (Sommerf.) Nyl., 1871

Photograph of a cross section of an apothecium of Lecanora fuscescens taken through a compound microscope (x1000), showing the section after treatment with para-phenylenediamine.   Note the orange-reddish reaction of the hymenium and orange-reddish crystals floating off of the epihymenium.

The Lecanora fuscescens was growing on bark along the trail up Black Mountain, just S of Tunk Lake, NE of Ellsworth, Hancock County, Maine, USA (44o35' N,   68o06' W,   Elevation 200 meters); collected by E.C. Uebel, identified by Dr. Irwin Brodo, (No. U-524, 11 Jul 2005).
