Up to Beds! Home Wood - Field Trip - 02/07/14 Hi all
Last night I joined Matt and Trent (Or Lionel, confused.com lol), at Home Wood near Biggelswade in Bedfordshire, hopping Counties for the first time this year (in fact I shall be travelling to Essex tonight, two Counties in as many days). Conditions were absolutely spot on with dominant cloud cover and a warm sultry temperature we set about our business to cover a nice wide area of the woodland. But before that we had to do a spot of tractor pulling.. well van, as Trent's van got stuck in the mud (I wonder if that piece of rope ever came off the tow-bar?)
The evening started well with plenty of micros and Geometers turning up first to the sheet.
Then at about 11pm it all went a bit mental really, the traps that we had left wee teeming with moths, you could barely see the trap underneath them, peering into the skinner actinic was like something out of a tropical rainforest catch and inhalation was definitely not a good idea at this point!
I have yet to write the list up as I have spent all morning photographing all of the moths which hasn't been easy with the warm weather and wind.
I think we must be knocking on the door of 200 species of Macro and Micro for the night.
Acleris kochiella, Assara terebrella, Eulamprotes atrella, Acleris holmiana, Hedya ochroleucana, Larch Pug, Mere Wainscot, Olindia schumacherana and Zeiraphera ratzeburgiana were new for me
So here are a few beauties from last night, mainly micros and several were new to me.
I wonder if we get a first for Bedfordshire out of all the things we potted, and the sack load of tubes heading David Manning's way.

Field Trip - Bramfield Woods - 25/06/19
A belated catch-up post from a field trip last month.
A couple of days after the bumper Bramfield Park Woods sesskion, we found ourselves over the other side of the road in Bramfield Woods. The day had been warm, but not the heat that was expected and upon arriving at the site, it was windy and there was drizzle in the air which as the night went on turned into bouts of dense mist. With that wind brought a coolness to the night and this really did keep numbers and species down for this usually prolific time of year.
Despite the awful conditions, we kept the lights running until around midnight and then packed up.
There were several site listers that we managed to find.
Dark Spectacle, Sallow Kitten, Buff Arches, Anania lancealis, Piniphila bifasciana, Spilonota laricana, Cydia nigricana and Triaxomera parasitella were all new.
Here is the total list.
Macro Moths : 77 species Micro Moths : 51 species
