Landhockey var med vid olympiska sommarspelen för män redan vid 1908 i London med sex lag, varav fyra kom från Storbritannien och Irland. Landhockey togs bort från 1924 i Paris på grund av bristen på internationell struktur. International Hockey Federation (FIH, Fédération Internationale de Hockey) grundades i Paris samma år som ett svar på landhockeyns utelämnande. Herrarnas hockey blev vid 1928 i Amsterdam en permanent sport på det olympiska sportschemat.
Damerna tävlade första gången vid 1980 i Moskva. Olympiska landhockeymatcher spelades först på konstgräs vid olympiska sommarspelen 1976 i Montréal.
