Kommunevåpenet vart teikna teikna av Magnus Hardeland. Han døydde før arbeidet var ferdig og det blei fullført av John Digernes. Kommunevåpenet vart godkjent av Etne kommunestyre i møte den 29.06.83 og av Departementet i brev av 21.12.95.
Etne kommune sitt våpen skal vera: Kløyvt av blått og sølv med duestjernesnitt.

The design is inspired by a tombstone at Ullensvang Church, belonging to the lawman Sigurd Bynjulvsson, who died in 1302 or 1303. As a municipal symbol, the arms were originally approved for the "old" municipality of Ullensvang by royal resolution 1979-10-08. At this point in time, the tinctures were red and gold. As the "old" municipality of Ullensvang was to be merged with Jondal and Odda into a new, larger municipality of Ullensvang (effective 2020-01-01), it was decided that Ullensvang's "old" arms should be kept by the new municipality, while changing the tinctures from red and gold to blue and silver.

The coat-of-arms is from modern times. They were adopted on 31 May 1991. The arms show a silver background with three black selburoses, designs which are typical for the patterns used in the local lusekofte (traditional Norwegian sweaters) and other woollen garments. Home knitting has been a long tradition in the municipality.
