Europeiska spelen är ett multisportevenemang som omfattar idrottare från hela Europa. Spelen är utformade av Europeiska Olympiska Kommittén (EOC) som också reglerar spelen. Den första upplagan ägde rum i Azerbajdzjans huvudstad Baku 2015. Spelen arrangeras med fyra års mellanrum.[1]
Det var den 8 december 2012, under Europeiska Olympiska Kommitténs (EOC) stormöte i Rom, som det bestämdes att de första europeiska spelen skulle anordnas. Det beslutades att spelen skulle fungera som de olympiska spelen men endast öppet för europeiska länder. I församlingen deltog samtliga 49 nationella olympiska kommittéer.[2]
Motsvarande tävlingar finns på andra kontinenter som panamerikanska spelen, asiatiska spelen och afrikanska spelen. Europeiska idrottsmästerskapen är en annan tävling med många sporter i Europa. I det senare fallet genomförs ett stort antal europamästerskap i olika sporter under samma tidsperiod på en eller två platser i Europa.
Sporter
De första europeiska spelen, 2015, innehöll 20 sporter. Inför andra upplagan, 2019, fanns 15 sporter på programmet. Skillnaden var att fäktning, simsport, taekwondo, triathlon och volleyboll inte fanns med i europeiska spelen 2019.[3]
