Ebolafloden, eller Legbala[1], är en 250 km lång flod[2] i provinsen Nord-Ubangi i nordvästra Kongo-Kinshasa.[3][4] Tillsammans med Dwa bildar den Mongalafloden, som i sin tur mynnar ut i Kongofloden.[5] Floden heter Legbala på det lokala språket, ngbandi. Namnet Ebola är en fransk anpassning av Legbala.[1][6] Under den koloniala tiden användes också namnet Eau blanche.[5]

1976 identifierades ebolaviruset i Yambuko, cirka 100 km från Ebolafloden. Mikrobiologen Peter Piot gav viruset namn efter floden för att inte Yambuko skulle associeras med sjukdomen.[1]

This 1976 photograph shows two nurses standing in front of Ebola case #3, who was treated, and later died at Ngaliema Hospital, in Kinshasa, Zaire. Ebola hemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF) is a severe, often-fatal disease in humans, chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans that has appeared sporadically since its initial recognition in 1976.
