"The Steerage" by Alfred Stieglitz
Cover of Camera Work, No 2, April 1903
"Experiment in Three-Color Photography", photograph by Edward Steichen. The slight rainbow effects noticeable in the ripples on the surface of the pond and in bits of the foreground foliage are tell-tale indications of the same method of color photography now most closely associated with Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky: the sequential exposure of three plates, or three areas of one plate, through red, green and blue filters. Several processes were available for making a full-color print from the three negatives, including the direct production of three halftone printing plates for photomechanical reproduction in books and magazines.
