The stalked puffball mushroom Battarrea phalloides (Dicks.) Pers. Specimen photographed in Oahu, Hawaii, USA. Notes: "Found these growing right by the beach. Sandy soil, probably decomposing leaf litter. Dry, powdery texture. Woody, fibrous stem. Didn’t see any volva at the base."

The stalked puffball fungus, species Battarrea phalloides (Dicks.) Pers. Photographed in Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles County, California. "Notes: Discovered growing along a walking path on the greenbelt that runs through Hermosa Beach, California, an urban area about 7 miles south of LAX. The greenbelt is about 500 meters from the Pacific Ocean at that point. Wood chips and mulch are added to the path about once every year, which may be source of the Battarrea Phalloides. I have not seen these mushrooms growing in that area in past years. Herbarium specimens sent to Nathan Wilson for study and safekeeping."
