These eleven civilian scientists were assigned on July 26, 1967, to begin training for astronaut positions with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The group is the second of NASA's first six classes of astronaut trainees to be selected specifically on the basis of scientific education versus aviation backgrounds.
