Title: The Three Maries at the Sepulchre Origination: William Blake: inventor, delineator, colorist Composition Date: 1800-03 Note: Although inscribed "1803" by Blake, in a letter to Thomas Butts of Oct. 1800 Blake comments that "I have not got any Forwarder with the three Marys or with any other of your commissions...." (Erdman page 712). Thus, Blake may have begun some work on The Three Maries at the Sepulchre as early as 1800. Butts received the finished work in July or Aug. 1803. Butts; offered Sotheby's, 24 June 1903, lot 3 (bought in at £120 by "Manning"); by inheritance in 1905 to the widow of Frederick J. Butts and sold by her in April 1906 through Carfax & Co. to W. Graham Robertson; sold from his collection, Christie's, 22 July 1949, lot 37 (£1,115 to the executors of Robertson's estate for presentation through the National Art Collections Fund to the Fitzwilliam Museum).
