Beskrivning:
This video was recorded by Kristen Tcherneshoff in Yakutsk, Russia. Northern Sotho is one of the 11 official languages of South Africa. It is spoken by more than 9 million people, primarily in the provinces of Limpopo, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga. Northern Sotho is largely developed from the Sepedi dialect, and many use the names interchangeably, yet their are slight distinctions between the two: Sepedi refers specifically to a dialect, while Northern Sotho refers to the official language of that name and the six dialect clusters it covers.

Within South Africa, The Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology oversees the translation of government documents and literary texts into the Northern Sotho and they also render terminology services. PANSALB has a lexicography unit, focusing on dictionary creation. The African Languages Association of Southern Africa and the African Association for Lexicography carry out research on the development of Northern Sotho, among other languages. There is no newspaper published in the language; however, Radio Thobela and some other programs on SABC 2 use Northern Sotho in their broadcastings.
