Beskrivning:
The U.S. Navy light cruiser USS Juneau (CL-52) underway at 1154 hrs on 26 October 1942, during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands.

Shortly before noon on 26 October 1942, Grumman TBF-1 Avengers were returning to the USS Hornet (CV-8) only to find the carrier dead in the water. The aircraft were signaled to head for USS Enterprise (CV-6). Juneau also read the the signal and thought it was intended for her and proceeded towards Enterprise, as shown here.

Note that Juneau had been repainted to a solid pattern camouflage since 16 September 1942, when the last known photo was taken at Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides. The exact colour of paint applied is not known, surviving textual records show that Captain Swenson of Juneau wanted to paint her with a medium gray ("Mountbatten Pink") that was applied to U.S. Navy ships in the South Atlantic. However, it is unknown, if that colour was available at Tongatabu where the ship was in port for several days. Therefore the exact colour is unknown.
