Beskrivning:
Myadestes palmeri — Puaiohi or Small Kaua'i Solitaire/Thrush; adult bird.
  • Juveniles look very different, having heavily contrasting, scalloped undersides.
  • The Puaiohi is one of the few surviving solitaires from the Hawai'ian Islands. It is threatened with extinction due to avian malaria and habitat reduction, and only occurs around Alaka'i Swamp. It does readily reproduce in captivity, and a considerable number of birds bred at KBCC have already been released into the wild to bolster the species' population.
  • In the picture, the black 'teardrop' streak can be seen which is a characteristic marking of the Puaiohi. However, in the natural habitat, this bird is heard more easily than seen, as its coloration provides excellent camouflage.
