Mural monument in Winchester Cathedral to Sir w:Henry Miers Elliot (1 March 1808 – 20 December 1853), Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB), an English civil servant and historian who worked with the East India Company in India for 26 years. He is most known for The History of India, as Told by Its Own Historians based on his works, published posthumously in eight volumes, between 1867–1877 in London. He married a daughter of William Cowell, a judge at the Provincial Court of Appeal, at Bareilly, Bengal, India. (Text from Wikipedia). Arms of alliance: Dexter, circumscribed by a ribbon with the motto of the Order of the Bath (Tria Juncta in Uno) pendant therefrom a neck badge of the Order of the Bath: Ermine, a fess between four cotises wavy gules two flaunches or (Elliot (of Pimlico, Middlesex)) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.322); Sinister: Azure, a lion rampant argent a label of three points gules charged with nine bezants (Cowell) (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.236).
