Male mosquito, Anopheles maculipennis, now re-classified Anopheles atroparvus. Mosquito species indigenous to Britain and capable of carrying the Plasmodium vivax parasite which causes benign tertian malaria (also historically known as agues or intermittent fever). It breeds in brackish water in coastal and estuarine areas and has a limited flight range.
