Beskrivning:
Participation in the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, better known as the Istanbul Convention, adopted on 11 May 2011, and effective since 1 August 2014 upon 10 ratifications including 8 by CoE member states. CoE member state Azerbaijan has neither ratified nor signed the Convention yet, nor did Russia before it was expelled from the Council of Europe in March 2022 following its invasion of Ukraine. Several non-CoE states were involved in elaborating the Convention, but none of them (Canada, the Holy See (Vatican City), Japan, Mexico and the United States) has signed nor ratified it so far; the European Union did sign it, but has not ratified it yet. The Convention is open to accession by non-CoE states, but none have used this option so far.
