Oil painting of the dowager Empress Cixi of the Qing Dynasty siting on an armchair, by Dutch painter Hubert Vos. On the backdrop, painted to depict a bamboo forest, there is an inscription written from right to left in traditional Chinese 《大清國慈禧皇太后》 (simplified : 《大清国慈禧皇太后》), meaning "Great Qing Empire Cixi Empress". Bowls of fruit surround the sitter, as for any highest-rank personage in Imperial China.
