Beskrivning:
Print from Harpers Weekly, August 1881, entitled The Girondists, from a painting by Carl von Piloty. French tricoteuses used a single Tunisian hook (also known as Afghan hook) for tricot crochet, which creates a flat fabric. Later illustrations mistakenly showed them using three needles to create a tubular fabric, e.g. stockings, on the misunderstanding that the "tri" part of the word "tricoteuse" represented three needles, and because three-needle knitting was common in the 19th century. A closer view of this part of the picture, showing the three needles, is available here: File:Die Gartenlaube (1880) 657.jpg
