Beskrivning:
The G.A.R. Memorial at Lincoln Park in Olean, New York, as seen in July 2021. The south side of East State Street between Union and Barry Streets has been occupied by a park dating back to the earliest history of Olean: it appeared as such in the original plot of the city laid out by Major Adam Hoops in 1808. In 1909, at the city's centennial, members of the local chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic petitioned the city's Common Council to rename the park in honor of former president Abraham Lincoln, and additionally asked for erection of a memorial to local area soldiers. Though their request was approved, the monument seen here didn't materialize until 1938, when the local chapter of the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War presented plans to the Council for a monument to be placed in the center of the park that would be seven feet eight inches in height, with a base five-and-a-half square feet in area. The G.A.R. Memorial was dedicated in October of that year, and since 1950 has shared the park with the Gold Star Mothers Memorial to local veterans of the Second World War.
