Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae), Pike County, within the Stairway Wild Area of Delaware State Forest.
The hemlock woolly adelgid is an exotic insect pest that has wreaked havoc on the forest ecosystems of eastern North America. Finding the pest here, in this remote corner of Pike County, was disturbing but not surprising; wind, wildlife, and humans easily spread the pest to new locations. Nearby locations, including the Lacawac Sanctuary and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, have been infested for years.
The forest overall still seems healthy. Second-growth hemlocks are abundant, along with a few old-growth specimens that escaped both the logging and the mining that once overtook the region.Mer information om licensen för bilden finns här. Senaste uppdateringen: Tue, 27 Aug 2024 08:13:24 GMT
