Such flags were flown by ships of North African provinces of the Ottoman Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The number of stripes could vary (between four and at least thirteen). Red-and-yellow horizontal stripes are attested specifically for 18th century Algiers[1], and for Karamanli-era Tripoli[2]
