Desy tesla cavity01
Inside the cavity, the electric fields from standing electromagnetic waves accelerate the charged particles. The resonator was built from high-purity niobium and is designed for a resonance frequency of 1.3 GHz. The resonator consists of nine elliptically shaped cells (ellipsoids of revolution). The length of a single cell is chosen so that the electric field of the wave is about to reverse when a particle enters the next cell. This ensures continuous acceleration. At typical operating temperatures of around 2K, the niobium cavity is superconductive and requires less energy to operate than conventional copper cavities.
