Croft Gardens, Hartlepool Headland. The croft was the heart of the old Hartlepool. It was a crowded rabbit-warren of houses and yards separated by narrow streets and passage-ways, including Sandwell Chare which led down to the Sandwell Gate through the Town Wall to the beach at Fish Sands 614464

The Croft was demolished in 1938 and Sandwell Chare was filled in. Part of the area was laid out as gardens in 1949 part of the redevelopment of High Street. A sculpture in the gardens in shown here 1606370
