Nortåg 2-car EMU X52 9034 is seen at Haparanda on 18 July 2023 having worked train 7184, 11:23 Luleå Centralstation to Haparanda.

The line from Boden to Haparanda lost its passenger service in 1992 but was kept open for a healthy level of freight traffic. Between 2004 and 2012 part of the route was upgraded and electrified from Boden via Morjärv to Karlsborg. Work also started on a brand new section of line from Kalix to Haparanda. The original line from Morjärv to Haparanda taking a more northerly route was abandoned. In 2021 Nortäg started up a passenger service through to Haparanda again making just one intermediate stop at Kalix. Currently three round trips run per day.

Unfortunately passenger services no longer carry on over the border to Tornio using the dual gauge bridge. At the time of writing, the closest rail passengers get to a cross border is to walk over the road bridge or take a local bus service and use the dated overnight service between Helsinki and Kolari which stops at Tornio-Itäinen. Alternatively buses run from Tornio to Kemi for a better choice of rail connections southwards plus the line to Rovanemi and Kemijärvi.
