Biltmore House at Biltmore Estate, a national landmark district in Asheville, NC (1895). It is still the largest private residence in the United States and is still occupied by Vanderbilt descendents. George Washington Vanderbilt's estate once eclipsed 120,000 acres, inlcluding all of the mountains visible from the estate. Vanderbilt wanted a manor reflective of the large estates in Europe, particularly Waddesdon Manor in England, and the Château de Blois, Château de Chambord, and the Château de Chantilly in France.
